Emerre & Hathaway Poverty Bay Men's Open 2025

There is less than one week to go before we tee-off in the 2025 Emerre & Hathaway Poverty Bay Golf Club’s Men’s Open Golf Tournament here at Awapuni Links in Gisborne.
The Entry Field has been a shifting target with numerous withdrawals since we first called for entrants. But right now the field is full — with all those who started out on the Reserves List now in the field. This is worth noting for future Opens; getting on the Reserve List early is pretty much a guarantee of entry.
Just a reminder that your entry includes:
1 x optional practice round on Wednesday, September 24.
2 x 18-hole rounds of qualifying stroke play on Thursday, September 25.
4 x 18-hole rounds of matchplay in divisions on Friday, September 26 and Saturday, September 27.
It also includes:
• Entry to Craigs Investment Partners $20,000 Hole-In-One Challenge
• Entry to BDO-Emerre & Hathaway $1000 nearest to Pin Competition
• Neighbourhood Pizza night on Thursday evening
• 3 x BDO-Sean Shivnan Pharmacy lunch packs
• Friday Night Calcutta dinner
• Saturday night prize giving and BBQ — All Blacks vs Australia will be screened on the TV
• Chance to win trophioes and prizes in seven divisions
• Lounge and bar open each day from 11.00am.
Cooked breakfasts will be available in the Dining Room each morning from 6.00am at $15.00. Plus! The Daffodil Coffee Cart will still be on site by the Pro Shop each morning for those who want a barista-style coffee.
The Craigs Investment Partners $20,000 Hole-In-One Challenge is on again. This is a classic hole-in-one promotion, set up on our notorious par 3 11th (or the 15th while we are playing the Alternative Open Course). All players have one chance during the first round of qualifying, and the first person to score an “ace” will win the money. That’s $10,000 in cash to the player and a corresponding donation of $10,000 to local charity The Sunrise Foundation. Conditions apply.
The popular BDO-Emerre & Hathaway $1000 Nearest to Pin Competition is on again. The approach winners from each of the two qualifying rounds on the three par 3 holes on Thursday will go into a shootout on the 18th on Saturday afternoon at the conclusion of the finals. Two attempts per player, nearest to the pin takes the money! Plus there will be one lucky player drawn from the crowd in the club house on Friday night, but you must be in the clubhouse to be lucky.
If you are a visitor to the Poverty Bay Golf Club, this will be your chance to say hello and welcome to our new Pro Shop owner and golf coach Skylah Pohatu who took over the business from Dave Keown on September 1. Skylah is operating her business as ‘The Swing Room’ and will continue to stock a full range of golf clubs and golfing accessories.
Please note: The Men’s Open follows our Women's Open which is to be played on Monday and Tuesday. The Women’s organising committee advises that the practice fairway will be closed during their event. The course will be available for men to practice no earlier than 3pm on Tuesday afternoon. The course will have changed over to the Men’s Open alternative course layout from Wednesday and all men’s entrants are welcome to play practice rounds on Wednesday. Call in to the Pro Shop before you play where you will receive a pamphlet outlining the schedule of events for the week and a map of the alternative course.
We are now into a six-day countdown to the start of the 2025 Open. The course will be presented in competition condition. “Hard and fast,” according to our Head Greenkeeper Rowan Clark. The aim is to get the greens running around 10.
See you all soon.
